Team Teaching in Grade One

It is our aim to cover as many individual needs as possible within the classroom, in order to do this we sometimes practice Team Teaching. In this picture, the weekly guided reading session in First Grade is being taught by the classroom teacher (Lupita) , a support teacher (Beth) and a teacher from the Green Room (Liliana). The special needs of our students are accommodated by a Green Room teacher, while the other two teachers focus on the skills to be taught to the other students.

The small group arrangement adopted within a guided reading session lends itself naturally to target the specific reading abilities and teach the necessary skills to improve the children’s reading. Within this small group setting of 3 to 5 students the teachers can focus on differentiation. When we hold a guided reading session, we can also practice the Transdisciplinary Skills required by our PYP programme, for example, the ability to work independently. As they enter Primary School the child needs to be self-reliant and this is practiced when students follow written instructions and the teacher oversees the activity.
