Areas of Interaction

The areas of interaction are a way of approaching the subjects taught in school. They are not taught separately but help teachers to plan and students to understand WHY they learning what they are learning. They also stress the common threads that run through subjects, so students can see the connections between subjects.

Learning to Learn
How can I learn better?
How do I know things?
How can I communicate what I have learnt?

Community and Service
How do we live in relation to others?
How can I contribute to the community?
How can I help others?

Environment
Where do we live?
What resources do we have or need?
What are my responsibilities?

Health and Social Education
How do I think and act?
How am I changing?
How can I look after myself and others?

Homo Faber
Why and how do we create?
What are the consequences?

The Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills for students aged 11-16 years.

The programme offers an educational approach to build on traditional school subjects. It naturally follows the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and serves as excellent preparation for the Diploma Programme (DP).

There are 3 fundamental concepts that underpin the MYP:
Holistic and global education
Communication
Inter cultural awareness

MYP Students
are self motivated
have a desire to improve themselves
are open to new ideas
have an international perspective
contribute to their community and society
are analytical and critical thinkers

Th MYP in The Lancaster School will run from Form 1 to Form 5, and include the teaching of SEP and IGCSE subjects.

The Personal Project

The Personal Project is an independent research project. It is a creative endeavor of the student's choosing that demonstrates the skills the student has learned in Approaches to Learning. The Personal Project is designed to demonstrate the student's ability to organize, create, and complete a significant body of work. Personal Projects can take many forms, such as:

  • An original work of art (visual, dramatic, performance, etc.)
  • Creative writing
  • An original science experiment
  • An invention
  • A presentation of a developed business or organizational plan

  • The Curriculum

The MYP is not a curriculum in itself but provides a way for students to answer the two important questions:

Why do we learn what we learn?
    How can I learn better?

    Subjects

The MYP uses 8 areas of teaching, that will include all the SEP subjects, plus French and ???. In addition the students undertake a personal project (in the final year of the Programme).

The subjects are taught by using 5 areas if interaction. These are:

    • health and social education
    • environment
    • homo faber
    • community service
    • approaches to learning

    Assessment

Students are graded according to criteria, given by the IBO. These grades are translated into SEP grades using a conversion table.

The grade criteria are displayed in classrooms and given to students so that they know why they receive the grade they are given.
