IGCSE Chemistry students planned a day of activities to celebrate international
Mole Day on 23rd October.
An all day treasure hunt, "Who wants to be a Moleionare?", mole cake, water balloon quiz, puppets and pin the nose on Avogadro were just some of the interactive games planned by the students. On display throughout were a golden mole and an Avogadro Bust. Staff were treated to several moles of sugar in the form of biscuits and sweets and mole music was there for everyone's enjoyment at both breaks, with mole (in exchange for mole calculations) and a mole video as a special treat during second break. Six lucky students won a helium balloon by guessing how many moles of helium it contained and Avogadro himself was on hand to take pictures from fans in the Lancaster community. Well done form 5 for your excellent planning.
What is a mole? It is a chemist's way of counting particles. We count eggs in dozens and sweets in packets, and the mole is how we count particles. One mole of any substance contains 6.02 x 1023 (Avogardo's number) particles.
