PROGRAMME OF STUDY: French

 

 

 

 

 

Secondary: 1st Year SEP (Form 2)

 

 

Knowledge, skills and understanding

 

During Form 2, pupils will learn and develop basic vocabulary and structure in French, and will learn to communicate in a variety of situations.

They are encouraged to acquire sound language learning skills and the beginnings of oral and written competence.

 

The aims of the course are to:

 

·        develop the ability to use the language effectively for practical communication

·        form a sound base of skills and attitudes for further study of the language

·        offer insights into cultures of countries where French is spoken

·        develop awareness of how languages are learnt

·        encourage positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures

 

It is proposed that pupils achieve these aims through some or all of the following activities:

Pupils will be successful in this course should they meet the following success criteria:

 

·        Take part in simple structured conversations of at least three or four exchanges.

·         They are beginning to use their knowledge of grammar to adapt and substitute single words and phrases.

·         Their pronunciation is generally accurate and they show some consistency in their intonation.

·        Show that they understand short written texts, presented clearly.

·        They identify and note main points and some details.

·        When reading, as well as using a bilingual dictionary or glossary, they use context to work out what unfamiliar words mean
