EXAMS EXAMS EXAMS IGCSE and A level exams are upon us. Check your STATEMENT OF ENTRY and the EXAM TIMETABLE to make sure you have the correct date and time for each paper. Bring a PEN, PENCIL, RULER, RUBBER, CALCULATOR, PENCIL SHARPENER to each exam, in a clear plastic bag. Now is the time to see your teachers and clear up any last doubts you may have. Remember, you cannot take your cell phones into any exam. FORM 5 - next years options. Maths is compulsory for L6 students. The only choice you have is in which course you take. Very simply, IB Maths courses come in three sizes 1. Maths Studies is for you if- - you have taken Core IGCSE - you are planning on a pure Arts course at University - you find Maths difficult
2. Choose Standard Level Maths if- - you have taken Core or Extended IGCSE - you are planning to do a Social Science course at University - you enjoy Maths but have other priorities
3. Higher Level Maths will suit you if- - you have taken Extended IGCSE - you are interested in Engineering, Medicine or Science careers - you enjoy Maths and want to explore it further Before making your final decision, remember that you can talk about it in more detail with your Maths teacher. Make your decision based on your needs and priorities only.
REMINDERS This link will take you to the results from the UKMT Intermediate Challenge. The time to get your GRAPHICAL CALCULATOR is fast approaching. All IB students will need one next year, and it is highly recommended that Forms 4 and 5 also have them. Please only buy the model recommended, although if you already own another model, check with your Maths teacher to see if it will be suitable for IB Maths. Watch this space for further details...

GRAPHICAL CALCULATORS
-Links-
We suggest that you visit bigger branches of Sanborns, Office Max or other large suppliers of electronic hardware to buy the calculator. The TI 83 and the TI 84 plus Silver edition are similar enough so as to be acceptable. |
The IB Maths courses REQUIRE all students to be able to use a graphical display calculator(GDC) The IBO allow a variety of calculators to be used during their courses, but it would benefit students and teachers if all students could have the same model. The Lancaster School Maths Department would like students to have the TI-84 plus, pictured. This is an piece of equipment for all students starting IB Maths courses in August 2007 onwards, and so the current Form 5 are advised to buy one as soon as possible. Students in Form 4 should buy one as well, as the more familiar they are with the machine before IB courses start, the better. Current Form 3 students should buy one before they start IGCSE Maths courses in August 2007, as the new Maths IGCSE specification requires students to be able to use the GDC, and they will be examined on this skill in their 2009 IGCSE exam.
