Pre-First Yellow Teacher
Alison
I am a Canadian and I have been living in Mexico City for 14 years. I have been part of the Lancaster community as a parent for over 9 years. I have three children who are Lancaster Students; two in primary and one in secondary. I taught at Lancaster from 1999-2004 in the Learning Support Department and now I’m back as a Pre-First Teacher. I’m really excited to be teaching children at this age level since they are so enthusiastic and full of curiosity. I look forward to an excellent year.

Pre-First Blue Teacher
Tona
I started at Lancaster in 2002 teaching Pre-first. I am now in Grade 1 and am really enjoying the change of curriculum content and seeing my students from last year continuing to grow and develop. I also work with students from the integration project and give learning support to a range of students.

What we have been learning:
We just completed a unit of inquiry with the Transdisciplinary Theme of “How We Organize Ourselves”. The Central Idea was “Maps provide us with the information about places.” We worked on the skills necessary to read and use a map: coordinates, north, south, east, west, language of direction, plan view, and routes. We learned about map legends, the compass rose, who uses a map and why and how to make floor plans. The final assessment was done in stages to help the children acquire the skills to draft a floor plan of their home and trace an emergency evacuation route. Some outstanding examples of these floor plans can be seen on the display board right outside of the main office. |

What we are learning:
We have begun a new unit of inquiry with the transdisciplinary theme of: “How the world works”. The central idea is ”We can harness and make use of the force of magnetism in our daily lives.” We will be examining the follow questions about magnetism: · How do magnets work? · What do magnets do to other materials? · What can magnets be used for in our daily lives?
We will lead the children to draw conclusions about these questions by doing many different experiments in class. These experiments will also give us opportunities to develop maths skills in the area of data recording and analysis. In English we will focus on using the vocabulary of this area of physics. The final assessment in English will be to design and build a game or useful object that harnesses the force of magnetism.
