Pre-First Yellow Teacher

Alison

I am a Canadian and I have been living in Mexico City for 15 years. I have been part of the Lancaster community as a parent for over 12 years.  I have three children who are Lancaster Students; two in secondary and one in primary.  I taught at Lancaster from 1999-2004 in the Learning Support Department and in 2007 I returned as a Pre-First Teacher. I’m really excited to be teaching children at this age level since they are so enthusiastic and full of curiosity.  I look forward to an excellent year.

Pre-First Blue Teacher

Sarah

I am Sarah Follen Tomlinson, the proud and lucky teacher of Pre-First Blue.  I am from Boston, Massachusetts in the United States however have not lived there for almost eight years.  Before moving to Mexico City in August of 2007 I lived in Glasgow, Scotland for one year and then in Dubai, UAE for four.  For that reason you may notice my accent isn’t typically Bostonian anymore!

When I first arrived at Lancaster I worked as a Learning Support teacher then later worked as the English Coordinator as well.  I began teaching Pre-First Blue in February 2009 and have been enjoying it ever since!

What we have been learning:

We are excited to introduce the last Unit of Inquiry for this school year…  Magnets: May the Force Be With You!

The Trans disciplinary Theme is How the World Works.  It will be an inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

The Central Idea is that we can make use of different forces, including magnetism, in our daily lives .

During the course of this inquiry we will lead the children to explore the concept of forces through the following lines of inquiry:

·What forces are

·How magnets interact with other materials

·What magnets can be used for

The children will consider such questions as:

 ·What is a force?

 ·Why do things fall?

·Why do astronauts float in space?  Why don´t we float on earth?

 ·Why does a magnet stick?

·Why don’t magnets stick to every surface?

 ·How do we use magnets?

The summative assessment will come in the form of an exam using true and false, fill in the blank and labelling diagrams.  It will enable us to assess whether the students understand what a force is and whether they can identifies how forces can be used in our daily lives.

Please ask us questions about our inquiry, we are enthusiastic to talk about it!
