Subject Specific Expectations

Grade 4 – Science

 

In this grade, PYP Science related topics take place within the organizing themes of How the world works, Sharing the planet and Who we are, .  The children will encounter traditional Scientific fields of knowledge in a way which transcends the disciplines in order to increase significance of learning for children of all cultures.

 

Skills which the children will develop will include:

 

• Responding to a question by putting forward suggestions as to how to answer it

 

• Choosing to use a fair test to answer a question where appropriate

 

• Gathering and selecting information from sources provided

 

• Making reasonable predictions based on prior experiences

 

• Selecting suitable equipment to use for the task

 

• Recording and presenting information gathered in a variety of ways, including bar charts, tables and simple graphs

 

• Looking for patterns in data and starting to relate these patterns to their conclusions

 

• Suggesting improvements for their work, giving reasons

 

 

Science based PYP topics include:

 

In and out of the body –

                        Examining the senses, how they work and how they can be damaged

                        The excretory system and getting rid of toxins

                        Drugs which help us and drugs which harm us

 

Space –         The Earth’s movement in relation to the solar system

                        How the earth’s movement affects the seasons and the calendar

                        Lunar patterns

 

Saving the Planet –

                        Different kinds of pollution

                        The impact of industry on the environment

                        Advantages and disadvantages of technology on the planet

                        Examining the idea of carbon footprints and how we can lessen our own personal impact on the environment
