Subject Specific Expectations
Science – Grade 3
In this grade, PYP Science related topics take place within the organizing themes of Who we are, How the World Works and Sharing the planet. The children will encounter traditional Scientific fields of knowledge in a way which transcends the disciplines in order to increase significance of learning for children of all cultures.
Skills which the children will develop include:
• Observational skills – gathering and recording information in a variety of ways including reading a variety of scales and measuring quantities such as length of mass, using a range of simple equipment
• Making basic predictions based on what we already know
• Identifying Patterns, connections and parts of a system
• Establishing links between causes and effects and providing explanation for observations
• The use of appropriate scientific language
• The use of a fair test where appropriate and with support
• Making suggestions to improve their work
Science based PYP topics include:
The Body Systems – examining parts of different body systems
looking at how the systems rely on one another
what we need to do to keep the systems healthy
Changes in Materials – examining a range of materials and their properties
investigating ways in which materials can be changed through
breaking, mixing, heating and cooling
Growing Plants - looking at the uses of plants
studying the parts of plants
determining the elements needed for plants to grow
growing a plant from seed and taking care of it
