Subject Specific Expectations

Grade 2 – Science

 

In this grade, PYP Science related topics take place within the organizing themes of Who we are, How we express ourselves, How the world works and Sharing the planet.  The children will encounter traditional Scientific fields of knowledge in a way which transcends the disciplines in order to increase significance of learning for children of all cultures.

 

Skills which the children will develop will include:

 

• Observing objects, living things and events

 

• Gathering and recording information in simple ways such as in tables

 

• Measuring quantities such as length or time using simple equipment

 

• Describing observations using appropriate scientific vocabulary

 

• Making suggestions as to how information can be collected

 

• Being guided through the idea of a fair test

 

• Making basic predictions based on questions asked by the teacher

 

• Comparing results with predictions

 

Science based PYP topics include:

 

Colour – looking at the spectrum and how colours can be mixed

                considering the use of colours in our daily lives and in nature

 

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Mind –

              learning about the different food groups and why they are important

              explaining how out diet affects our health

              considering the elements of a healthy lifestyle such as exercise

 

Earthly Measures –

              looking about what the earth is made up of; eg. core, mantle, crust

              how components of the earth such as volcanoes and earthquakes affect each other and us

              how and why the earth is changing and what is may look like in the future

 

Extinction or Survival –

              identifying ways in which the environment is threatened

              the extinction of animals and how humans threaten their survival

              how animals and humans support each other’s survival
