Subject Specific Expectations

Grade 1 – Science

 

In this grade, PYP Science related topics take place within the organizing themes of How we express ourselves, How the world works and Sharing the planet.  The children will encounter traditional Scientific fields of knowledge in a way which transcends the disciplines in order to increase significance of learning for children of all cultures.

 

Skills which the children will develop will include:

 

• Describing features of simple objects, living things and events

 

• Communicating their observations in simple ways such as drawings

 

• Using simple equipment provided

 

• Comparing and observing changes

 

• Using basic scientific vocabulary

 

• Using simple texts to find the answer to a question

 

Science based PYP topics include:

 

Sound – Looking at the parts of the ear and what they do

                Identifying different kinds of sounds

                Communication between animals

                How we use sounds to give warnings or instructions

 

Reduce, reuse, recycle –

                Looking at how rubbish has an impact on the environment

                Identifying rubbish which can be reduced, reused or recycled

                Exploring ways in which we can recycle rubbish at school and at home

                Rules on recycling rubbish

 

Light, Shadows and Reflection -

                Natural and artificial sources of light

                How shadows are made by the sun and how we can make them ourselves

                How the position of the sun affects the size and location of shadows

                Surfaces which reflect light well and those which don’t

                How reflective surfaces can make things look different
