English
Pre First
This year we are
working with a new scheme to support our teaching of English as a second
language. Faces is introduced in Kinder 1 and follows
on throughout Kinder. Dominoes 1 is introduced in Pre
First and continues throughout the Primary years. It aims to build on the children’s confidence
in Speaking English and correcting many common grammatical errors. It builds on
previously learned skills and development and revises prior structures.
Dominoes
1 has a focus towards
oral skills and covers the following language structures:
Common
questions and responses in affirmative and negative.
Possessive adjectives and possessive s
Verb to be
affirmative and negative, singular and plural
Verb to have
Indefinite
articles a and an
Giving and
following instructions
Prepositions
Plurals
Pronouns he, she,
they and we and non count nouns
Present
continuous
These skills will
be reinforced in other English classes and also in other subject areas such as
art, music, science and maths.
Speaking and
listening:
The children will
use a variety of oral language appropriately and with increasing confidence
talking about their own feelings, thoughts and opinions and be able to work in
small and large group
to discuss their ideas. They will listen with greater
concentration and with greater consideration for others showing sensitivity and
respect. They will be able to pick out the main events and relevant points.
They will begin to use tone, volume and intonation to enhance meaning
Children will
respond to stories and rhymes in a variety of ways including role-play. They
will have an awareness of the 44 sounds of English and blend some of these
sounds for reading along with other skills for reading including predicting,
using pictures, self correcting, reading on and using grammatical cues. They
will discuss and explain what they have read and retell and re-enact stories.
They will develop
a sight vocabulary. They will begin to use a variety of texts for different
purposes
Writing:
Children will
define fine and gross motor skills and begin to use capital letters and full
stops.
They will begin
to use their phonetic knowledge to blend sounds for spelling and use common
spelling patterns.
