English
Kinder 1
This year we are
working with a new scheme to support our teaching of English as a second
language. Faces is introduced in Kinder 1 and follows
on throughout Kinder. Dominoes 1 is introduced in Pre
First and continues throughout the Primary years. It aims to build on the children’s confidence
in Speaking English and correcting many common grammatical errors. It builds on
previously learned skills and development.
Faces 1 covers
the following language structures:
Greetings
Simple questions
e.g. Can you…?
How are you?
Simple responses
Everyday home and
school vocabulary related to body, family, animals, numbers and food.
Simple statements
e.g. Look at…, I can…, He/she is…, It’s a/an…, I have…
These skills will
be reinforced in other English classes and also in other subject areas such as
art, music, science and maths.
Speaking and
listening:
Children will
daily use oral language for social interaction and to obtain understanding and
knowledge of the world around them.
They will
communicate their needs, feelings and ideas.
They will give
and follow instructions.
They will listen
to songs, stories and chants and respond appropriately.
Children will be
enjoying stories and books and experimenting with reading behaviour.
Children will be
sharing books and stories and talking about what they have heard, anticipating
repetitions and predicting what may happen next.
They will begin
to recognise letters and the sounds they make.
Writing:
Children will
enjoy experimenting with writing by making marks in sand and with different
mediums, developing their fine motor control.
