Grade 5
This year we are
working with a new scheme to support our teaching of English as a second
language. Faces is introduced in Kinder 1 and follows
on throughout Kinder. Dominoes 1 is introduced in Pre
First and continues throughout the Primary years. It aims to build on the children’s confidence
in Speaking English and correcting many common grammatical errors. It builds on
previously learned skills and development and revises prior structures.

6 continues to have an
oral focus but has a greater focus towards writing skills and covers the
following language structures:

These skills will
be reinforced in other English classes and also in other subject areas such as
art, music, science and maths.
Speaking and
listening:
Children will
have an increasing awareness of the power of language. They will use speech
responsibly and interact confidently in a variety of situations, adapting their
speech to their audience and purpose.
They will be able
to give complex instructions and messages and respond appropriately to the
instructions of others. They will be able to listen to seek information, gain
knowledge, for instructions and for enjoyment.
They will listen
to others showing sensitivity and respect for their viewpoints, debating a
point with their own clear arguments.
Children will
evaluate their choice of reading material from different genre. Make use of
skimming and scanning as strategies to read for relevant information. They will
be able to identify key features, themes and characters and select sentences,
phrases and relevant information to justify their views. They will interpret
and analyse differing points of view and how these are influenced, in poetry,
play scripts, fiction and non-fiction text types.
Writing:
They will be able to effectively plan and edit
a piece of writing and write in different styles depending on the audience and
function of the text. They will use appropriate punctuation and grammar using
standard spelling, checking when they re unsure. They will investigate sentence order and
construction.
They will make
use of synonyms, metaphor and similes.
Their writing
will make use of more adventurous vocabulary choices using words for effect and
clarity.
