Grade 4
This year we are
working with a new scheme to support our teaching of English as a second
language. Faces is introduced in Kinder 1 and follows
on throughout Kinder. Dominoes 1 is introduced in Pre
First and continues throughout the Primary years. It aims to build on the children’s confidence
in Speaking English and correcting many common grammatical errors. It builds on
previously learned skills and development and revises prior structures.

5 continues to have an
oral focus but has a greater focus towards writing skills and covers the
following language structures:

Imperative
Superlative
Interrupted past continuous
Imperative
Adverbs of manner
Modal auxiliaries
may, could and would Reported
speech
Future with

Object pronouns
Prepositions Conjunctions
Impersonal
pronouns
Quantifiers
Determiners
Questions
Giving
personal information, advice etc.
These skills will
be reinforced in other English classes and also in other subject areas such as
art, music, science and maths.
Speaking and
listening:
Children will interact confidently in a
variety of situations exploring different linguistic features to present their
ideas and adapt their speech accordingly.
In discussions
they will be able to listen carefully and sensitively to others, asking
questions and contributing appropriately. They will be able to listen for
sustained periods to find out information, to gain knowledge, for instructions
as well as for enjoyment.
They will be able
to give more complex instructions, directions and messages and respond
appropriately to the instructions or information given to them.
Children will
read and explore the structures and meaning in a variety of text types, using
different strategies and appreciating the differences between texts. They will
read for information and for enjoyment.
They will be able
to locate important information in a text and be able to refer to it to
demonstrate their understanding and explain their views.
In fiction they
will identify different elements of a plot and discuss the characters and the
intentions of the author.
Writing:
Children will write for a range of audiences
and purpose adjusting their use of language to the text type and audience with
a wider vocabulary, choosing words for effect. They will explore the use of
punctuation and grammar and use independent spelling strategies such as
phonetic knowledge and constructing from other words with similar patterns.
Children will experiment with word order and sentence structures.
