English
Grade 3
This year we are
working with a new scheme to support our teaching of English as a second
language. Faces is introduced in Kinder 1 and follows
on throughout Kinder. Dominoes 1 is introduced in Pre
First and continues throughout the Primary years. It aims to build on the children’s confidence
in Speaking English and correcting many common grammatical errors. It builds on
previously learned skills and development and revises prior structures.
Dominoes
4 continues to have an
oral focus but has a greater focus towards reading skills and covers the
following language structures:
Impersonal

These skills will
be reinforced in other English classes and also in other subject areas such as
art, music, science and maths.
Speaking and
listening:
Children will take part in discussions,
listening appreciatively and responsively to others and showing respect. They
will be able to explain their views and begin to ask questions and debate,
developing their ideas through reflection. They will listen for information,
instructions and enjoyment and for more sustained periods of time.
Children will
read regularly for a range of purposes and across a wide range of text types
understanding the differences and functions and selecting appropriate
information to answer questions and support their understanding. They will
understand differing ideas and feelings expressed in texts by using inference
and deduction. They will begin to
appreciate the intention of the author and distinguish between fact and
fiction. They will explore different story structures. They will use a range of
strategies to tackle unknown words including rereading to check understanding.
Writing:
When writing for different purposes and
audiences children will explore the use of punctuation in text. They will
accurately spell high frequency words and use knowledge of phonics and spelling
patterns to spell other words and check when they are unsure. They will begin to adapt their style and use
of language to the needs of the audience. They will develop a wider vocabulary
and experiment with different language structures and devices.
