English
Grade 2
This year we are
working with a new scheme to support our teaching of English as a second
language. Faces is introduced in Kinder 1 and follows
on throughout Kinder. Dominoes 1 is introduced in Pre
First and continues throughout the Primary years. It aims to build on the children’s confidence
in Speaking English and correcting many common grammatical errors. It builds on
previously learned skills and development and revises prior structures.
Dominoes
3 continues to have an
oral focus but has a greater focus towards reading skills and covers the
following language structures:
Present

Imperative
Can and like
Descriptions
Future tense with
going to, affirmative and negative
To be: past tense

Countable and
uncountable nouns
Comparatives

subject
Questions in
present and past tense
These skills will
be reinforced in other English classes and also in other subject areas such as
art, music, science and maths.
Speaking and
listening:
Children will listen appreciatively and
respectfully to others to gain information or knowledge, for instructions and
for enjoyment. They will be able to respond appropriately showing
understanding, expressing their own ideas. They will use a wider range of
vocabulary and adapt their voice tone and register according to the situation.
The children will
read independently, in pairs and in groups, a range of text types both for
pleasure and information recognising the differences between fiction and
non-fiction. When reading aloud they
will read fluently and with appropriate intonation. They will be able to talk
about what they have read and answer questions and express opinions, making
reference to the text. When tackling a challenging text they will use a variety
of strategies such as phonic, contextual and grammatical.
Writing:
They will experience and appreciate different
types of writing structures and write with a sense of purpose and audience
selecting vocabulary appropriately and using punctuation to support meaning.
They will use knowledge of phonics and spelling patterns when attempting to
spell unknown words independently and will be able to use a dictionary to
check.
