English
Grade 1
This year we are working with a new scheme to support our teaching of
English as a second language. Faces is introduced in Kinder 1 and follows on
throughout Kinder. Dominoes 1 is introduced in Pre First and continues
throughout the Primary years. It aims to build on the children’s confidence in
Speaking English and correcting many common grammatical errors.
It builds on
previously learned skills and development and revises prior structures.
Dominoes
2 has a focus towards
oral skills and covers the following language structures:
Common
questions and responses including short answers in affirmative and negative.
Adjectives,
possessive, descriptive and demonstrative
Verb to be plus
adjective
Imperative
3rd
person affirmative and negative
present continuous
These skills will be reinforced in other English classes and also in other
subject areas such as
art, music, science and maths.
Speaking and
listening:
Children will show greater confidence in talking and listening; they will begin
to show an awareness of the needs of the listener and can listen to others
with respect and sensitivity. They will reflect on what has been said and
respond appropriately. They will listen with increased concentration for instructions,
to gain knowledge and understanding and for enjoyment. They will begin to
formulate sensible questions to clarify meaning or extend understanding.
They will be able to give simple instructions and respond appropriately to
instructions given to them.
Pupils will read a variety of texts silently and aloud at times individually,
in pairs or in a group using a range of strategies to decode and to find meaning.
They will be able to express opinions and preferences and give reasons.
They will be able to retell and re-enact a familiar story. They will develop an
increasing sight vocabulary. They will predict and discuss situations in a story
and be able to
identify with a character and respond to the ideas and feelings expressed.
Writing:
Writing at this level will begin to show an awareness of purpose and audience,
ideas will be organised and sentence structures will be longer. Many high frequency
words will be spelt correctly
and full stops and capital letters will be used appropriately.
